Introduction

The following three case studies showcase key projects that demonstrate my approach to visual storytelling, information design and problem-solving under pressure. They highlight my experience in creating clear, accurate and engaging visual products for complex editorial and digital environments.

Mapping the War in Ukraine for the BBC's Ten O'clock News

Challenge
Artboard 1.png

Following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, I was responsible for producing maps and visual explainers for the BBC's Six, Ten O’Clock and International News programmes, where rapidly changing military developments had to be communicated accurately to national and international television audiences.

My role was to analyse and verify geographic and military information from multiple sources, including satellite imagery, open-source intelligence, data from the ISW and translate it into clear broadcast graphics that could be updated throughout the day.

Role

I worked closely with correspondents, producers and editors to assess incoming information, prioritise competing demands and create maps that explained front-line changes, territorial control and key strategic locations in a way that was accurate, accessible and visually clear. The work required meticulous attention to detail and the ability to remain calm while delivering to extremely tight deadlines, often with several revisions before

transmission.

Results

The graphics formed part of the BBC’s flagship news coverage during one of the most significant international conflicts in recent history and were broadcast to millions of viewers across the Six and Ten O’Clock News. This experience demonstrates my ability to analyse complex information, exercise sound judgement, collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, and deliver high-quality outputs under sustained pressure.

Process: Data from ISW (Institute for the Study of War) → QGIS → SVG → AI → AE → Output

Social media explainers

Leading visual investigations at BBC Verify, I responded to high-stakes developments – including threats around Iran's subterranean nuclear facility at Pickaxe Mountain, the launch of Trump-class warships and Iranian disinformation campaigns – by translating complex multi-source intelligence into high-impact social media explainers, annotated infographic maps and locator maps. Using QGIS, satellite imagery and open-source datasets, I constructed detailed locator maps and annotated infographics of Pickaxe Mountain g, designed graphics to show the size of the US Navy's new Trump-class warship and designed visual explainations to show state-backed media manipulation. By applying user-centered design (UX) to digital-first formats, I converted dense, ambiguous intelligence into intuitive visual narratives that reached millions under live deadlines

The Strait of Hormuz

I used OSINT techniques and marine traffic data to visualise shipping activity through the Strait of Hormuz during the US–Iran conflict, helping audiences understand the wider impact of geopolitical events on global trade. By analysing vessel movements and combining AIS data, mapping and clear data visualisation, I created graphics that showed how disruption to a key maritime chokepoint could affect energy supplies, shipping routes and international markets. The work translated complex real-time information into an accessible visual story, providing editorial context around a rapidly developing global event.
